Decide what is included
List rooms and surfaces separately: walls, ceilings, baseboards, crown molding, built-ins, doors and closets. State whether furniture will be moved and whether you want the current colors matched or a color change.
Surface preparation and repair
Show nail holes, cracks, water stains, failed caulk or damaged drywall before estimating. Ask how patch texture will blend, whether stains need a blocking primer and how floors and belongings will be protected.
Finish and daily use
Discuss washable finishes for busy rooms, appropriate sheen for trim and a flat or matte ceiling finish where suitable. Product choice should account for ventilation, expected wear and the surface condition.
Before you compare estimates
Ask each company to describe the same work, materials, preparation, protection and exclusions. The lowest number is difficult to interpret when the scopes differ.
Common questions
Should trim and walls use the same paint?
They may use different product types and sheens. Ask the estimator to identify both separately in writing.
Can someone paint over water stains?
The source of moisture should be resolved first. The damaged area may require repair and a suitable stain-blocking primer before finish paint.
How long will interior painting take?
Duration depends on room count, repair needs, drying conditions and occupancy. Ask for a schedule based on the actual scope.
