Count and describe the pieces
Separate doors, drawer fronts, frames, end panels and islands. Note whether interiors, shelves and hinges are included, and whether hardware will be reused or replaced.
Ask about adhesion
Degreasing, sanding or deglossing, repairs and an appropriate bonding primer can determine whether a finish holds up. Ask how the existing coating or wood will be tested.
Plan for use and curing
Cabinet products may feel dry before fully curing. Discuss the finish type, spray or brush application, off-site versus on-site work, ventilation, reassembly and when the cabinets can return to normal use.
Before you compare estimates
Ask each company to describe the same work, materials, preparation, protection and exclusions. The lowest number is difficult to interpret when the scopes differ.
Common questions
Can stained cabinets be painted?
Often, but the preparation and primer must fit the substrate and existing finish. Request a coating plan for your cabinets.
Will every cabinet be sprayed?
Methods vary with site conditions and the desired finish. Ask which components will be sprayed or brushed and where the work occurs.
How soon can I use the cabinets?
That depends on the specific product, temperature and humidity. Follow the manufacturer's cure guidance given by the painting company.
